Your generous and sympathetic call to have a Solidarity Meeting towards the sheer atrocities against our fellow Christian brethren in Orissa for killing the innocent people, priests, nuns and outrageously burning of churches is totally insane. Your profound contribution for healing the cause in togetherness by praying for God in humanity is very much appreciated at this hour.

I the undersigned along with our likeminded members amidst our Nuvem Kuwait Parishioners salute your commendable spiritual values for the organized prayers at VillaGE Inn where all have given their precious time for the love of GOD and where all the attendees silently prayed for the departed souls to let them have the eternal peace in the kingdom of heaven - Amen.

Though Seeing is said believing - But still those who dont see and still believe in the name of god will find the eternal blessing from heaven. Further more, I too wish you an extra good health to carry on the cross of spiritual salvation to formulate the mankind values and human kindness contribution, speciallay to those who have been deprived of their real humanity at work and other values. This you have very much articulately shown when there was a great injustice meted towards some nationalities at this place. Keeping your utmost desire in mind, let us once again pray for the departed souls AND pray to god to grant them eternal rest in peace for ever and ever in the kingdom of heaven - Amen.

May the hearts which are hidden in darkness to utter the distress call may shine upon with your kind of workmanship and contribution. God bless you and all those who took part for the Solidary Meet on 13th instant on your well organized contribution. All the best and may there be peace always in our community level too.

With best regards,

Conceicao Teotonio Gomes.

Parish Youth of Nuvem edged out Varca Sports Club 4-3 via the tie-breaker in the finals of 37th Custodio memorial football tournament, organized by Raia Sporting Club at panchayat grounds, Raia on Tuesday (6/08/2008). There was no score at full time.
Both teams started off in right earnest but it was Nuvem who called the shots in the first half as tries from Richard Colaco and Daniel Colaco were fisted to safety by Varca goalie Braz Reagan Alemao.
In the 12th minute a powerful 30-yard shot by Nuvem’s Joaquim Coutinho livened up the proceedings but his terrific try was tipped over the bar by Reagan, who used his height to good effect.

The festive crowd at Raia was kept engrossed by further goal-mouth thrills from Nuvem as Daniel Colaco seemed charged up to give his team the lead. But, his efforts were nipped in the bud by Varca defender Quelon who thwarted three good charges by the rival player as he braved the slippery pitch and drizzle to offer his best.
Varca’s only possible chance in the first half came off Agnelo Rodrigues, but his header missed the target off Alzy Coutinho’s deadly cross.
In the second half, Remy Colaco was in the thick of action for Nuvem as his twin attempts whizzed past the Varca goal and his last-ditch attempt to break the deadlock off a free-kick was superbly saved by Reagan with a forward lunge.

In the tie-breaker, Nuvem scored through Daniel Colaco, Joaquim Rodrigues, Richard Colaco and Marcus Carvalho while Richard Fernandes shot over.
For Varca, Carmo Rebello, Arnald Fernandes, Quelon Alemao were on target while Elvis Fernandes and Mohammad Shaikh missed their tries.

The Chief Minister Mr Digamber Kamat and south Goa MP Mr Francisco Sardinha awarded the winners and runners-up trophies along with Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Following prizes were awarded: Best forward of final: Remy Colaco (PY Nuvem). Man of the match: Carmo Rebello (Varca SC). Best defender: Quelon Alemao (Varca). Best goalkeeper: Regan Alemao (Varca). 1st Scorer of final: Daniel Colaco (PY Nuvem).

NUVEM VILLAGERS ..... in the news

Nuvem villagers demand special gram sabha
HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, JULY 29 – Nuvem villagers have demanded a special gram Sabha meeting as promised by the Sarpanch to discuss housing projects proposed in the village.
Gram sabha members had last month submitted a representation to the Sarpanch demanding the special gram sabha as promised at the meeting held on May 18 to discuss issues relating to construction (commercial-cum-residential as well as mega projects) in the village.
Based on the representation, the Salcete Block Development Officer, Uday Prabhudessai had also requested the Sarpanch to take immediate steps to hold the special gram Sabha at the earliest.
However, Nuvem Civic and Consumer Forum maintained that despite several representations, the Sarpanch has not only failed to hold the special gram sabha, but has also failed to hold the July gram sabha meeting.
Forum Convenor Olencio Fernandes said the NCCF had held ward-wise awareness meetings on irregular water supply, erratic electricity, garbage menace, effect of bore wells and mega constructions which if allowed will bring immense problems later on, such as increase in migrant population, reducing Goans to a minority in their village.
According to Fernandes, as many as 14 letters from different wards were addressed to the Sarpanch, demanding holding of the special gram sabha to discus the construction projects.
The Forum has warned that if the Sarpanch fails to announce the special gram sabha meeting within a week, necessary action will be taken by the people of Nuvem.

Activists protest at Nuvem over delay in subway work
BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, JUNE 20 – School children and civic and consumer rights activists took to the streets of Nuvem on Friday morning in protest against the inordinate delay in completion of the subway work.
Armed with placards and shouting slogans, the school children demanded the immediate completion of the water logged subway and posing danger to the school students and pedestrians.
That’s not all. The steel rods protruding from the subway is creating a nuisance for both pedestrians and motorists alike.
This morning, students of Holy Cross Convent came out on the street to protest against the inordinate delay in completing the work.
The school principal told newsmen that the school had lost a student two years ago and do not want to loose any more because of the incomplete subway.
She said the children are forced to agitate against the indifference attitude of the PWD department to expedite the subway work. “Are to going to wait for a tragedy to happen on the road. What would happen if a child falls into the waterlogged subway”, she questioned.
Maina Curtorim PI Dharmesh Angle later held discussions with the school Principal and assured to deploy a policemen at the site in the morning session. He, however, told the Principal to get the subway matter resolved at the government level.
When contacted, PWD Executive Engineer, Deshpande attributed the delay to the contractor abandoning the work.
Deshpande said the contractor has been asking for revised rates in view of the steep rise in prices of cement and steel. “We are in the process of terminating the contract and tender the work again”, he added.

Carmel College for Women, a Christian college, was established in 1964 to fulfil the long felt need for an institute for higher learning for women in Goa. The site for the college was generously donated by Mrs. Thelma Da Costa Lourenco of Margao, whose dream of a women’s college has become a reality.

The college is permanently affiliated to Goa University in the faculties of Arts, Science, and Commerce. It is managed by the Sisters of the Congregation of the Apostolic Carmel, a Roman Catholic Congregation.

Carmel college situated on Margao-Cortalim highway, has a spacious and modern building with adequate facility for study, games and recreation and a large campus for expansion. Nestled at the foot of the hills, it is an excellent place for study and reflection. Carmel college caters to the educational needs primarily of Catholic students. However all women irrespective of caste, creed and status are free to seek admission.

The college has been awarded 3 STAR accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission, placing it among the ‘A Grade’ colleges in India.

The Carmel Higher Secondary Section was started in July 1975. Within 30 years of its inception, it has made giant strides towards offering an all-round education to the budding young girls of the state, particularly of the village of Nuvem. The courses of studies include the General streams of Arts, Science and Commerce. The Vocational Stream has three sections – Commercial Garment Designing and Making, Office Secretaryship/Stenography and Computer Techniques.

Nuvem infrastructure fails to keep pace with time

Nuvem infrastructure fails to keep pace with time
The awakening of Goan masses and its ripple effects....

BY HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, MAY 19, 2008

- If Nuvem villagers are up in arms over the construction of 40 bungalows, the message is loud and clear for the powers that be - don’t issue indiscriminate licences for mega housing projects without taking into account basic infrastructure requirements.
It’s prime location on the NH-17 - right on the northern entrance to Margao — and the booming real estate is an indication that Nuvem is the destination for many a settler in Goa.
Sadly, many a local feels the infrastructure has not kept pace with the booming housing constructions mushrooming in Nuvem countryside.
Take for instance, the fish market. While one find bungalows perched on a hillock as one enters Nuvem from Margao, fisher folks continue to sell fish from a makeshift market right adjoining the highway - bringing to the fore the absence of basic infrastructure.
That the local MLA and Power Minister, Aleixo Sequeira has now taken up work on the proposed market is not in dispute, but the fact remains that infrastructure has failed to keep pace with the changing times in Nuvem, which is fast acquiring urban features.
Leave alone market facilities, the village is grappling with the garbage menace. No garbage disposal facility has been identified by the local body and locals wonder where the garbage generated in the new housing complexes would find their way in the absence of any dumpyard.
That agitated villagers are opposed to the mega project - relating to 40 bungalows with swimming pool facility — is an indication that the locals would no longer take things lying down now.
When contacted, Local MLA Alexio Sequeira said issuing construction licences is the domain of the local village Panchayat body. “It’ for the Panchayat to assess the infrastructural requirements before granting permissions for new constructions”, he added.
Nuvem Sarpanch, Antonio Barretto, who came under fire at the Sunday’s gram Sabha meeting, however, said that technical agencies such as the PWD and the Town and Country Planning department should guide the Panchayat body on technical and basic infrastructure such as roads, water, power et al.
“Why is the Panchayat blamed when these technical agencies approve the construction plans”, he asked and disclosed plans to approach the government to define the meaning of mega housing projects.
However, Town and Country Planning officials maintained that it’s purely for the local Panchayat body to evaluate the existing infrastructure and then only to forward the file for technical approval. “If the Panchayat feels so, the file can be returned back to the builder at the Panchayat level itself.”, a TCP official said.

Villagers demand scrapping of housing projects in Nuvem

Villagers demand scrapping of housing projects in Nuvem
Serve 8 days deadline to panchayat
BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, MAY 22 – Nuvem villagers have served a virtual deadline to the Panchayat members to either scrap all commercial housing projects within eight days time or resign and dissolve the Panchayat body.
This decision was taken at a meeting of the villagers held after last Sunday’s gram sabha meeting, which had vociferously demanded scrapping of mega housing projects.
“The village panchayat, Nuvem must realise that with the coming up of such projects, we will not only loose our identity and become aliens in our own home land, but it will become a great security risk with migrants roaming the streets, especially after 8 pm”, the villagers said.
“In North Goa, people are crying that their girls cannot walk on the road alone, even for tuitions”, a villager said and asked whether Nuvem wish to have the same situation in the village.
He pointed out that the roads are littered with garbage bags, while the rivers are pollution with waste. “Mosquitoes causing malaria, dengue and chikungunya and any other new sicknesses have arisen”, he added.
Pointing to the inadequate infrastructure, roads, water and power, to meet the current needs, the villagers maintained that the ancestors have preserved Nuvem for the people and it’s the responsibility of the present generation to protect the beautiful village for posterity.
Incidentally, Nuvem have been witnessing vehicle thefts and other burglaries in recent times, with the Men-in-uniform unable to achieve any breakthrough.
In fact, the people have been complaining of migrants stalking the streets at night, with the police night patrolling proving ineffective to reign in on the thieves and burglars.

Complaint filed by Nuvem residents

Complaint filed by Nuvem residents

From:
Residents of Belloi, C/o Mrs. Alda Souza,
99/U, "OUR NEST", Belloi, Nuvem, Salcete-Goa.
Dated 0l.02.2003.

To,
The Deputy Superintendent of Police,
Police Headquarters,
Margao - Goa.
Sub: Complaint against nuisance caused by a neighbour.

Sir,

We the residents of Belloi, Nuvem, hereby wish to submit as under :

This otherwise, extremely peaceful neighbourhood situated in Belloi ward
is for a long time now being disturbed by one Mr.Prasad; an obnoxious neighbour
who is a tenant of Mr.Joao Paul Dourado, a house owner in the neighbourhood.
The said man living in the above mentioned house all by himself with about
4 dogs is nothing but a menace to the neighbours.

The man is not known to hold a job or run any business and his whereabouts
are unknown. He is also known to be under influence of drugs/alcohol
at any given time.

Mr.Prasad has on several occasions set the dogs on the neighbours
to such an effect, that the children till date have to traverse to school
and back or anywhere else via the parallel lane to that of their residence
for fear of being attacked by these dogs. No amount of complaints
to the Panchayat or the Police who visit the neighbourhood for information
of unknown persons has yielded any effect as on date.
It is almost three years now that Mr.Prasad has been intimidating relatives,
friends and visitors to the neighbourhood; who also have on several occasions
been bitten by his dogs and physically assaulted by him. Even a polite request
from the neighbours to keep the dogs in check has only given him an opportunity
to assault them and use filthy language. Please find enclosed herewith
a Police complaint filed in this respect by Mrs.Margarita Gomes
(SDE No. 60/0l at 23.30 hrs on 07/07/0l).

He is known to have had numerous altercations with her.
He has trespassed the property of Mrs. Alda Souza by scaling the compound
wall with an excuse of searching for his lost dog.

The said Mr.Prasad has the habit of howling at the dogs in a very loud
and frightful manner every night upto 3.00 a.m. or 4.00 a.m. in the morning
and mercilessly beating them, thereby causing a loud noise and disturbing
the peace and tranquility of the neighbourhod especially that of the sick
and the old. Those dwelling on the side of his residence especially,
fall victims to this nuisance.

On 30/12/2002, it was noticed that Mr.Prasad had abandoned one of his dogs
that died after unsuccessfully trying to burn it.The pieces of the dog were
strewn by his other dogs all over the neighbourhood causing emanation
of a stench for over a week. This is the second instance since the last time
that two of his dogs were left dead in his compound by him without burying,
thereby causing a stench for over a week. His immediate neighbours unable
to bear the stench had to leave their residence at night and go elsewhere
to get some sleep.

Besides being of the opinion that this weird man has no right to spoil the
peace and cause nuisance and hardship to other neighbours, the mounting
patience of this neighbourhood has long run out due to nuisance caused and
the high handedness exhibited by him. It is gathered that he was summoned
by the Panchayat vide letter no. VP/Nuvem/2001-02/592 dtd 18/7/2001
in response to the complaint received from Mrs.Margarita Gomes
(copy of summon enclosed). However till date his activities continued unabated.
The Police Officers and the constables who patrol the neighbourhood and
collect information on unknown residents have on several accounts been notified
of this fact and the same has been entered in their logbook; but no action
whatsoever has been taken so far to book this criminal. It is therefore felt that
the said man is being protected by some Superior in the Police department.

We hereby, earnestly request you to look into the matter and evict the person
from neighbourhood by seeking the cooperation of the owner of the house
Mr.Joao Paul Dourado who resides in Murda ward of Nuvem village, in order
to restore peace to this neighbourhood; thereby enabling the children and other
neighbours to use the lane freely without the fear that they have been
living with, for almost three years now.

Hoping you will take immediate action to put an end to this menace once
and for all.We thank you in anticipation and await justice.
Yours truly,

Residents of Belloi
Mrs.Margarita Gomes; Mr.Navraj Joshi; Mr.Basant Kumar Mehta;
Mrs.Blance Mascarenhoas, Mr.Aleixo Rodrigues; Mr.Michael D'Souza;

Another case of corrupt officials, I suppose eviction is out of the
question.
This animal needs to change places with his dogs and whipped likewise until
he learns to be considerate to his fellow neighbours.

Parish Youth Nuvem champions

Alvernaz & Lalush Alemao Memorial Cup

MARGAO, MAY 25 — Parish Youth Nuvem provided glimpses of planned play to record an emphatic 2-0 win over Ambelim Sports Club to lift the Alvernaz and Lalush Alemao Memorial Cup football tournament organised by Churchill Brothers in the final played at Varca Grounds on Sunday. Parish Youth were leading 1-0 at the breather..
The final was expected to provide plenty of thrills and excitement for the Sunday crowd but it turned out to be a one sided affair. The flair was missing in Ambelim sides and there were hardly any decent constructive moves.
Both the sides went on the offensive from the start and the pace was good initially. But as the match progressed, Parish Youth showed urgency and were more aggressive.

Parish Youth midfielders Daniel Colaco and Remy Colaco did a commendable job by spraying accurate passes to keep their forwards busy.
Ambelim failed to pile up the pressure that naturally suited the Nuvem lads to carry out the raids in search of goals and their efforts fetched them dividends midway in the first half when Joaquim Fernandes set piece from outside the rival box hit the Ambelim defender and eluded the rival goalkeeper to put them in front..
Parish Youth could have doubled the lead but their forwards messed after reaching the rival penalty area.
The Ambelim players after getting a pep talk from coach at the lemon break put up an improved performance on resumption immediately had two clear scoring chances to nullify the Parish youth lead but midfielders Stanley Fernandes and Percival D’Silva were the culprits muffing easy sitters.
Parish Youth continued their hunt for goals and attacked the rival citadel vigorously and Cedar Colaco ensured that the Parish Youth would go home with handsome margin when he found the target to kill the Ambelim challenge with a rasping strike.
Earlier Sporting Clube de Goa defeated Navelim Youth Eves 2-0 in an exhibition girls football match.

Parish Youth Nuvem was richer by Rs 60,000, while Ambelim Sports Club received Rs 30,000. The following prizes were awarded;
Best Defender Of The Tournament: Faisal Martins of Union of Chinchinim Villagers; Best Half Of The Tournament: Zico Fernandes of Young Strikers, Benaulim; Highest Scorer Of The Tournament: Vilroy D’Cruz of Varca Sports Club; Best Goalkeeper Of The Tournament: Reagan Alemao of Varca Sports Club; Best Midfielder Of The Final: Stanley Fernandes of Ambelim Sports Club.
Best goalkeeper of the final; Lenny of Ambelim Sports Club.

Chief Minister Digamber Kamat , who was the chief guest distributed the winner and runners up cash prizes. Speaking on the occasion, Kamat lauded the work undertaken by Churchill Brothers in promoting football in Goa and in India. He said despite being the family club, Churchill Brothers kept his name all over country and won the hearts of football lovers. Churchill Alemao proposed a vote of thanks. In all 16 teams participated in the tournament.

The tribunal also found that she was discriminated against on the ground of her sex, and awarded compensation for unfair dismissal and an award for injury to feelings for the sex discrimination.

What were the challenges in this case and the implications?

When I was first approached by Anna, it was evident that she had been dismissed because she was intending to adopt, but there was no documentary evidence that that was the reason for dismissal. The whole case hinged on the tribunal deciding in our favour on the basis of oral evidence given by the witnesses. It is always more difficult where there are no documents to back up what you are asserting. The implications for Anna were serious — she wanted to clear her name by showing that the real reason for her dismissal was because she intended to take adoption leave. A finding that her intention to adopt was the real reason for dismissal made her dismissal automatically unfair.

What was your worst day as a lawyer?

Probably being told early on as a trainee that it may be wise for me to consider Plan B, which was to become a restaurateur.

What was your most memorable experience as a lawyer?

Without a doubt watching the tears of joy roll down the face of Anna Coulombeau when I told her that all of her limbs of complaint had been decided in her favour by the employment tribunal.

Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?

A close family friend who suddenly passed away in 2001 just before my graduation from the University of Nottingham. She was always very supportive of my goals and aspirations, even when I questioned whether or not the law was the correct route for me.

Why did you become a lawyer?

I did not have the stomach to become a doctor. Seriously, the real reason was because I wanted to work closely with people and feel that I was making a difference to their lives, even though this sounds rather clichéd.

What would be your advice to anybody wanting a career in law?

Work hard, play hard and you will get to where you want to be.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Hopefully as an equity partner in this firm (if I haven’t bought a restaurant by then).

Norman Cardozo – the man who revolutionised
background music in tiatrs.

Daniel F. de Souza.

The konkani stage has seen many great musicians over the last many decades who have given their valuable talents to enrich Konkani music and thus making it popular among music lovers. Good music is essential for the success of any tiatr and so is a good music director. One musician who has worked his way up to the top in Konkani music with determination and perseverance and won him the enviable tag of Music director is non other than Norman Cardozo. Today Norman’s name is a part of most of the Konkani music albums produced in Goa.

Norman’s mother Flemina Cardozo sharing the glory and honours as she proudly holds the Gulab Award 2002 alongside her son.

Recently I had the opportunity to speak to this soft spoken, rather shy and very warm hearted musician who has trotted across the globe on professional assignments from the Gulf States to Europe, and far across the Pacific to Canada with his keyboards, taking konkani music to the world. Born in the picturesque village of Nuvem, in Salcette Norman had his primary education in Mae dos Pobres school there. Thereafter for his secondary schooling he was sent as a boarder to St. Joseph’s High School in Calangute. Having finished school through St. Joseph’s, Norman came back to R.M.S. (Damodar) Higher Secondary in Margao to continue up to XII STD.

Recalling his younger days Norman recalls fondly “ My parents were tiatr goers and I would accompany them during my childhood years. But, somehow I would push my way up to the stage and get enchanted watching the drummer at work from close quarters. On returning back home I would try imitating the drummer’s stunts using empty tins and creating all types of sound! My joining St. Joseph’s High school in Calangute helped me to further my interest in music. It was here at the age of 12 that I picked up the guitar and learned to play the same. Gradually, I was fascinated seeing the ‘Harmonium’ in the school chapel and I would make time to explore the same. I began exploring the chords from the guitar on to the harmonium. It was quite tough in the beginning without anybody’s guidance, but, with perseverance I managed to locate the chords on the harmonium. This thrilled me that I could handle two musical instruments effortlessly. ” For a musically inclined youth his age, it was not unusual to try his hands at different instruments. Taking advantage of the opportunities his school campus offered him, young Norman later began shifting his eyes to the Keyboards. It was a gradual shift no doubt, but, it was surely going to make a tremendous impact on his career which Norman did not realize in his teenage years.

Like any youngster his age, Norman was raring to go as a musician. He found the opportunity after he finished his SSC. Norman immediately joined a local beat group ‘Genesis’ as their vocalist and lead guitarist. He did a two year stint with ‘Genesis’. It was however, in the late 80’s that opportunity came knocking in the form of an assignment to play for a tiatr band in playwright Pascoal Rodrigues’ ‘Rozar’. He was taken in as the lead guitarist. More openings followed with other tiatr assignments as a guitarist, and he merrily obliged. But, the real good break came Norman’s way when Mario de Vasco entrusted him to provide music and background music in his new venture ‘Dumph’ on the keyboards under the guidance of Maestro the late C.P. Dias. Keyboards for live tiatr music were a still unheard of concept then, and hence the change did bring in some innovations and people accepted Norman on the keyboards for his talents.

Going down memory lane Norman said “ My brief encounters in music and the slow progress did not quite impress my mother. She was worried for me and my future. She coaxed me to take up a job overseas. On her advise I took up a job in Qatar on the rigs and worked there for 4 years. But, honestly while bodily I was there, my heart and soul was in Goa and into Konkani music. I filled the void by listening to Konkani music through audio cassettes and CDs and kept the desire alive”.

It was only on his return back to Goa from Qatar in 2000, that through Lawry Travasso he got introduced to playwright Mario Menezes, and from there on his career as full time musician literally took wings. There has been no looking back since then for this talented keyboardist. “Mario Menezes wanted some different background music in his play, he had confidence in me and gave me a free hand to experiment, at the same time demanding performance” remembers Norman. Mario’s show ‘He Chukhik Bhogsonnem Asa?’ took Norman to new heights in introducing out of the way and exceptional background music on the keyboards in tiatrs. Norman had arrived.

Norman Cardozo has bagged the prestigious ‘Gulab Award’ twice for konkani music in Mario Menezes show ‘Mhoji Maim Mhoji dusman’ (2002) and once again for Donald’s tiatr ‘Pallam’ in 2007. So far Norman has provided and scored music independently for nearly 30 odd Konkani music albums and equal number of VCD films too. Besides, he has played the keyboards for innumerable audio CD albums. During his musical evenings with drummer late James Rebello and his wife Vera at their Restaurant Picket Fences in Seraulim, Norman was spotted by nightingale Lorna, and that was beginning of another fairytale. Thereafter Norman has accompanied Lorna as her solo accompanist on the keyboard dishing out Chris Perry’s music during her long tours to entire Gulf, U.K., France, and Portugal, in Europe and in Canada too. He is a regular and frequent flyer to the Gulf for shows all throughout the year.

Lately Norman came in the news for a once in a lifetime event when he got the opportunity to play together with Elvis Goes’ cultural troupe at the Kalangan in Mangalore for the ‘Nirantori’ show organized by Eric Ozario, which catapulted Konkani music in the Guinness world record. ‘Ours was the only troupe in the show that performed with our own orchestra. We performed non-stop for one hour and did 15 songs without a break. I sincerely believe there was a ‘Hand of God’ a-la-Maradona in this event, by way of which I got my name featured in the Guinness record. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity’ said a beaming Norman in conversation with me.

While he is at the height of his career, Norman has not forgotten his formative years and reminisces “ In the beginning Edwin D’Costa of Nuvem has given me a lot of guidance, encouragement and imparted basic knowledge in music. I am thankful to him.” Among the present day younger singers on stage Norman holds, young and up-coming Alria Rose as highly talented. ‘We need talents like her, she is confident and can fire on all cylinders like her legendary father the late Alfred Rose. Wish to see her more on the stage.”

Before parting ways with him Norman had this message “ My message to the youngsters is, if you have a liking for music, go into it in a proper way, learn the Solfegio, and at the same time develop your natural ear for music. Work hard, believe in yourself and be committed. ”

The boy had finished his schooling in Kuwait, his graduation in Goa, and was in the process of applying for his MBA in Pune. He was riding pillion with a friend and in a bid to avoid an oncoming vehicle or object, was hit from the rear and the bike crashed into a lamp post which fell on his head. He sustained some 30 – 40 fractures in his skull and was kind of clinically dead all along, kept going on the ventilator until yesterday. Really very sad. Please pray for his soul and for his family.

NUVEM KUWAIT PARISHIONERS (NKP)

NUVEM KUWAIT PARISHIONERS

This year one of the village based Goan organizations in Kuwait “Nuvem
Kuwait Parishioners” is celebrating its Silver Jubilee. Twenty Five Years
back it was formed in Kuwait by a few of the enthusiastic Nuvemkars.
Originally when it was formed it was named as “Nuvem Villagers in Kuwait”
and under this name it functioned for 6 years and thereafter it was changed
to the present name “Nuvem Kuwait Parishioners”. Though initially it was
started with handful of villagers but currently it boasts of having over 100
members who are all involved in the promotion of this organization.

The motto of this association is to bring every member of Nuvem closer to one
another for the benefit of every member and also for the benefit of their
village Nuvem in Goa. No doubt this organization feels to do lot of
activities yet little funds they have at their disposal is not sufficient
enough to move at a faster and greater pace. Yet within its capacity it
lends financial assistance to any of its needy members or for any needy
cause back home in Goa.

For example, back home, NKP have donated Benches for the Holy Family Church (Kuwait City)in 1986, financial assistance to organize Inter Village Volleyball Tournament at Church Ground in Nuvem in 1988, Mutual Financial support Rs. 50,000/- towards an Operation Request for Sickness Appeal, organized for Nuvemkars an Emergency travel Schedule to travel in Unity at the time of Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, financial assistance for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help them to help the needy, donation of a Computer for the Parochial House of Nuvem Church Administration.
Besides, NKP has done lot of good deeds which they will continue doing of
course with the help of each and every member of Nuvem Village in Kuwait.

To mark the Silver Jubilee, offering of Thanksgiving Holy Mass will be held
at the Holy Family Cathedral in Kuwait City on 07.04 at 4.30 p.m. and
thereafter a get to gather will be held at the popular Village In Restaurant
7.00 p.m.

The committee consists of the following members:
1. ConceicaoTeotonio Gomes - President
2. Roque Fernandes - V. President
3. Lino Gabriel Fernandes - Gen. Secretary
4. Santano Fernandes - Dy. Gen. Secretary
5. Agusto C. Fernandes - Treasurer

The following are Active Members:
Ivan Gomes
Roque De Costa
Agnelo Borges
Frank Vaz
Alvaro Dias
Raphael Gomes

On behalf of myself and all the all wishers of Nuvemkars I wish Nuvem Kuwait
Parishioners all the best on their Silver Jubilee Celebration and hope they
will complete many more years not only to serve Nuvemkars but also to serve
all the Goyenkars who are doing good work for the cause of Goa. It is very
nice to see them together united for the last 25 years.

A. Veronica Fernandes,

Musician Norman Cardozo Felicitated in Kuwait

Nuvem-Kuwait Parishioners felicitated the well-known
musician Norman Cardozo

Exclusive Interview
Nuvem-Kuwait Parishioners (NKP) felicitated the
well-known musician Norman Cardozo from Murda Grande,
Nuvem - Salcete Goa for his outstanding achievements
in music on Monday, 19th September 2005.

Before landing in Kuwait to play in Comedian Philip’s
musical show ‘Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol’, he has played in
London for "Lorna". "Prince Jacob" and other Goan
artistes and mesmerized the audience with his solo
performance.

Lino Gabriel Fernandes, NKP Secretary honoured the
proud son of the soil with a memento and on behalf of
Nuvem Parishioner in Kuwait, Master Manfred Fernandes,
son of Agusto (NKP treasurer) felicitated the musician
with a Gold Pendant.

While the reception was on a prominent writer

telephonic interview with Norman Cardoz.

Lino B. Dourado: I had a great opportunity to see you
live on stage in Kuwait at Hawally A/C Auditorium for
Comedian Philip’s musical show ‘Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol’
on 16th Sept. 2005. After a long break Tiatr lovers in
Kuwait enjoyed your combination with Kuwait based
musicians. What do you think about this?

Norman Cardoz: Every show I’ve played with has a
different way of performing and in order to be a
sensitive accompanist, I have to orient myself to that
person’s frame of mind and suit my music to their
music. I would like to thank Shahu, Adrian and their
music troupe for their best support. That is the
reason ‘Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol’ was an instant hit show.

Lino B. Dourado: Before coming to Kuwait I understand
that you provided music for some Konkani shows and
tiatrs in Europe. Also what difference to you find
between the audience back home and in foreign
countries?

Norman Cardoz: In Goa I play almost every alternate
day in tiatr, wedding reception, beat shows, etc. I
meet Goan audience very often. No doubt I received
respect and appreciation all over Goa. After the end
of the shows normally the people are in a hurry to go
home and we musicians are busy packing our
instruments. Whereas in foreign countries like Canada,
UK, Portugal, Kuwait and etc., a gullible audience
encircle you to get a handshake and sign a few
autographs from the artistes. It stunned me that these
lovely people stood for hours to get autographs. Life
is inspiration. You feel honoured. You feel like you
have achived your aim.

Lino B. Dourado: You are well-known in Goan music
world as a best solo artist. How long have you been
playing now in tiatr fraternity?

Norman Cardoz: To establish a strong identity for
myself, first of all I have to do my homework well. I
want to be as good as I can be and to do as much hard
work as possible. This is a constant challenge. In the
beginning I used to play the guitar in tiatr. In 2001
I started on keyboard. I wanted to be my own so I
started ‘one man band.’ Ultimately, I received
appreciation from different corners and in 2002
versatile actor, singer, director-producer Jose Rod
invited me to play in his new drama ‘Devan Dilem
Denvcharan Velem’ in Kuwait. That was my first one man
performance in a foreign country.

Lino B. Dourado: So this is your second time in
Kuwait?

Norman Cardoz: Yes.

Lino B. Dourado: Have you won any awards? When and
which.

Norman Cardoz: As a best musician I have won the
prestigious 2002 ‘Gulab Award’ for Mario Meneze’s
drama “Mhoji Maim Mhoji Dusman”. This award I shared
with most senior music director Diniz.

Lino B. Dourado: What have you to say regarding the
Parishioners of Nuvem in Kuwait?

Norman Cardoz: While receiving the Nuvem-Kuwait
Parishioners’ memento from the hands of Secretary Lino
Gabriel Fernandes, I was overwhelmed and tears rolled
down because of the kind love and honour that was
bestowed upon me by the villagers. It feels so good to
get recognition for my work. I am greatful not only to
those who are present for the reception but all those
ganv-bhav who remember me in a one way or the other.
I will never forget this moment. I thank the
organizers for a wonderful evening.

Lino B. Dourado: What is your message to Goans in
Kuwait?

Norman Cardoz: Together work for the betterment of
the Goan community. Encourage the youngsters in music
and theatrical arts. I hope to see more Goans into
such creativeness and music. Thank you Lino Bab.
